Harvest Fest – Atlanta’s Back Porch Fairburn GA: September 28, 2002
Roots of Den! Visions is really coming into it’s own, and in this 6th performance, we can hear elements of the B section of Den, which wasn’t debuted until April 2012 at UM Bowl III.
Notable:
After a sweet Get in the Van, Brendan says “cheers everybody, good morning.” It must have been an early start.
Push the Pig, really becoming well-developed in the written parts, and allowing for some exploration in the quiet moments after the verses, including the synth work from Joel. This a is a stellar version even if it’s not yet exploring improv jam territory yet.
Roulette, Nothing Too Fancy > In the Hall of the Mountain King ending, which is now familiar as the ending of Thin Air.
Visions is already turning into a nice jam vehicle for the band, where they are repeatedly going into an improvisational section after the song. This is the 6th time they’ve played Visions, and they go to one of the root jams that was eventually turned into the B section of Den.
The main A section of Den, along with this B section, was originally earmarked for Raw Stewage, and it was debuted as a song on April 27, 2012 at Park West in Chicago for UM Bowl III. Both sections were played as part of the jam in Bright Lights, Big City on February 11, 2011 at the Fillmore in Denver, but here we can see that back in 2002, this was already an instrumental jam “lego” that they would play repeatedly in the coming years.
That jam piece turns quickly into the beginning of Second Self which is a great smooth transition.
Then Jake goes into a more patient beginning to Glory, sort of pointing to the way that it’s played these days, with the mellow build up from a solo Jake on guitar.
A nice tight Ringo, and then Pay the Snucka part 3 to finish the single set show.
