Jake’s Roadhouse Decatur GA: September 29, 2002

A free show after the two-day Harvest Fest in Georgia, Jake’s Roadhouse hosted a second-set radio broadcast. Highlight: 13 Days > The Fuzz > Kimble > Nothing Too Fancy in the first set.

Notable:

Second set was broadcast on the local radio station, and you can hear the radio host performing MC duties, and getting ready for the live broadcast.

Umphrey’s puts their best foot forward in this free show after the 2 sets they played at Harvest Fest. Before the first set, Jake talks to the host about how earlier in the year was their first time touring in the southeast.

Dump City to start, introduced as a warm up song before they take a break and then start the show proper. Still relatively new, Dump City has strong Fender Rhodes sounds from Joel, common in this era.

A good start to the show proper, with a southern sound Good Ol’ Boys, the familiar Dukes of Hazzard TV show theme by Waylon Jennings, sung by Jake in a southern accent.

The 13 days > The Fuzz > Kimble > Nothing Too Fancy is an awesome set of music. It’s a crisp pure soundboard, for the radio broadcast, and their playing is excellent.

It’s an exploratory and patient N2F, with an Unforgiven (Metallica) tease too.

Before the second set we get to hear the radio introduction and the MC introduce Umphrey’s to the live radio audience; they are broadcasting only the second set.

The first few songs are patient warm ups, with the new song JaJunk into the older Anchor Drops and then Smell the Mitten into The Crooked One, the latter two of which get some real jammy momentum.

A classic All in Time, at 14 minutes long, and then they realize that they can play longer and so Joel introduces the next song, “from our new album, Local Band Does OK, called Hurt Bird Bath.” Even if shorter than many versions at around 7 minutes, it’s a good one.

That’s the end of the radio broadcast, and for the encore, they dedicate the Syncopated Strangers to the band Moonshine Still, who I think played the previous Harvest Festival, and played late night after Umphrey’s.

Then it’s Andy’s Last Beer to end the show.
