Fillmore Auditorium Denver CO: October 31, 2002
Highlight:
Peter Gunn Theme/Every Breath You Take comes from episode 1, season 3 of The Sopranos.
Band dressed up as Sopranos characters, opening for Leftover Salmon, one set.
Notable:
Starts with Sopranos theme song playing over the PA. The band starts playing licks while the song fades out, and Mikey comes in with a similar rhythm, with Joel on the organ, bass and guitar keeping the jam going in the same key.
They play just a few notes of Push the Pig in that key and then smoothly move it up into the song’s key as they begin.
BB says in his Jersey accent, “so, happy Halloween to all-a-yous.” Jake affects the accent too and says, “this next one’s a new one.”
Miss Tinkles Overture starts with a short solo drum intro, setting the tempo. Miss Tinkles is a short-ish version, not yet having fully committed to a long exploratory jam.
As usual it transitions into Mulche’s Odyssey. They’ve played this combination of songs at 11 consecutive shows at this point, dialing in the two new songs both which debuted about three weeks earlier.
On the 9th of October they played Miss Tinkles without Mulche’s for the debut, but the next night they joined the songs for Mulche’s debut and have haven’t deviated so far.
Mulche’s doesn’t have an improv jam, but they build the energy and keep the rhythm and slam right into Roulette, in a beautifully tight transition.
Jamming Roulette is rare, and this one is a standalone version, common even to this day.
Joel, dressed as Tony Soprano in the morning, says “I want to welcome my son Anthony, Jr. to the show tonight. He’s right down there in the front row, Anthony, look at me. Where’s Meadow? He doesn’t know, I’m not surprised.” Joel does a passable Tony Soprano accent.
Joel starts Nothing too Fancy with the airy organ tones, and as Mikey and Ryan come in turns it into some very cool electronic flowing sounds.
Rush’s YYZ starts out with the triangle tempo sounding a little slower than normal; they eventually get up to speed when the riff kicks in, but the intro feels methodical and precise.
Brendan says “I’d like to thank Leftover for letting us play with them…a lot”
JaJunk is feeling polished. It has a tiny 1.5 minute jam at the end, as they bring the energy down to start The Triple Wide.
3x is also coming into its own, sounding very much like modern versions now, except for the lack of a jam. It’s a short, tight version.
The Peter Gunn/Every Breath You Take is a mashup that they cover from Sopranos episode, season 3 episode 1. I watched it again, it’s the track behind a montage segment where the Sopranos are being tracked and watched by the FBI, a fitting soundtrack.
It’s short and goes right into Der Bluten Kat.
