Otto’s DeKalb IL: December 6, 2002
Highlights: In the Kitchen debut, video in this post. One of Mikey’s last shows with the band. A 4-song first set. Robot World tease two years before the debut.
Notable:
A 15-minute improv jam starts the show, and it goes right into All in Time.
The AIT jam is marked by a 13-minute track titled “jam” and has some fun exploration and teases, Muffburger Sandwich and Muff II: The Revenge. Ends with Joel teasing Nine Inch Nails’ Closer.
They go right into a nice Push the Pig, which includes some Jake on beatbox.
The Resolution is a good one, with some electronic sounds to jam the end, and a short drums-led section before going back into the All in Time Brendan lyrics on top of the drums.
AIT takes a full 12 minutes to finish. Then it’s the Al di Meola version of Chick Corea’s Senor Mouse, excellent.
All in all, it a 4-song first set.
The jam to start the second set is a 19-minute jam. It begins with a familiar hip-hop tune instrumental, “I Got Love” by Nate Dogg. After about 3 minutes, the jam morphs into improv land.
At 12:30 they go into a short Robot World riff section. That song doesn’t debut for another two years on 8-7-2004 in Chicago at Navy Pier.
Quickly becoming a classic high-energy combo, Miss Tinkles Overture into Mulche’s Odyssey comes out and then goes into a jam with a quick Waiting Room tease before going into Dr. Feelgood.
A solid 13 days ends with a big cheer and Jake saying “thanks, guys.”
They start in on a 10th Grade tease, then into Garbage Man, sung by Mike. Mike has some improv lyrics while they’re having fun with it, and they go into the final section of Hangover with the crowd-participation vocals. (Not in the show notes)
They smoothly go into a jam that ends up being the debut of In the Kitchen. It’s still missing some lyrics and sections from the final version, but it’s the first official listing of the song at allthings. It doesn’t have the B section yet. (YouTube video shows Mike really well, and Joel is blocked by a pole in the venue.)
They go into JaJunk for a few bars and have to slow it down before they go into the song. No Quarter (Led Zeppelin) tease in the jam before the ending segments.
They quietly drift from JaJunk to Hurt Bird Bath, and it ends the second set.
Encore: Let’s Get it On by Marvin Gaye. Mike sings it well, and Jake is on drums. It’s only been played 3 times total, in 2000, 2002 and 2011.
Then Roulette. Joel says “come see us at the Vic Theatre in Chicago for New Years, it’s Mike’s last two nights playing with us.”
