The Bluebird Nightclub Bloomington IN: November 14, 2002
The track titles are incorrect in this recording at archive.org, so go by the show description or the allthings.umphreys.com setlist. The show plays in the correct order.
Notable:
A 5 minute jam to warm up, right into a great Kabump, that then has a jam that goes into Gin and Juice by Snoop Dogg.
Brendan raps the first verse of G&J. They’ve only played this 3 times, first verse only.
The jam continues another 2 minutes, and they slowly transition into the opening segment of Anchor Drops. A solid standalone version.
They softly enter the JaJunk zoom with to start this sandwich. The JaJunk jam has a cool section of disorganized jazz, sounding like it’s “everybody do their own thing at the same time”for a few minutes, and they drift into Big Heart.
Yummy Big Heart jazz number in the middle, the Lounge Lizards cover.
To end JaJunk, they tease Eminem’s 8 Mile in another rap song segment, this one without lyrics. It gradually speed up on tempo until they’re jamming another improv segment.
They go right into a solid Fussy Dutchman. Fussy has a high-tempo jam during BB’s solo portion.
Joel thanks the New Deal and announces the show coming up with them at Park West in Chicago. He also says “we do take requests.”
Hurt Bird Bath comes out swinging and with high-energy. It ends the set.
Miss Tinkles Overture into Mulche’s Odyssey, as usual. This 14th performance is one tight number; no big jams yet, but the pair is getting some teeth. Each of the two haven’t appeared without the other so far.
There’s a little transition jam at the end of Mulche’s as they bring it down for the beginning of 2×2.
It’s a strong 2×2, with a big build before the transition into BB’s solo part, this time with lots of weird electronic sounds from Joel. 2×2 hasn’t yet been leveraged into improvisational jams at that point in the song; it’s still just the two-chord riff that builds to the solo section.
Tribute to the Spinal Shaft is getting played every 5-10 shows these days: this one has a nice segue into Glory, still at its faster tempo.
Uncommon has a cool start this time, with Jake doing the beatbox. Then they slam it into a hot Prowler.
Then the classic Fugazi cover, Waiting Room. In the small pause section, BB says “hey Vince, I need a towel…”
Syncopated Strangers to end the set.
The crowd chants “Mirro, Mirro, Mirro…” during the encore break.
Rain Song tease before The Song Remains the Same to end the show.
