The Buskirk-Chumley Theatre Bloomington, IN: September 21, 2002
Lots of new songs: Smell the Mitten with the written instrumental segment to end, and a barn-burner second set with Phil’s Farm > Visions (4th time played) > Kabump. The 7th JaJunk > Out of Order > The Song Remains the Same is excellent. New songs 13 days, Uncommon, and Roulette end the show.
Notable:
They open the show with a killer Prowler which is followed by a whole band jam for more than five minutes which is an awesome prowler jam and then they go into the new song, Smell The Mitten, that kind of splits the first instrumental segment into two different parts before they finally go into that final full band jazzy section.
And Smell the Mitten in a lot of recent versions doesn’t go into that jazzy section; these days they tend to play The Jetson’s theme and then go into a creative improvisational jam instead of playing that jazzy baseline jam.
A really nice version of Water, and then a 10-minute The Haunt. Pay the Snucka part 3 has Social Jimmy teases.
Way before Zonkey, Umphrey’s McGee used to do this The Girl is Mine > Jane Says > The Girl in Mine, and this is a great example. Combining the two songs as if they were written together works well here, then they go into a Cherub Rock tease to end.
The audience wants them to play Front Porch, but they only tease it, as a false start before Push the Pig, and then they go into Front Porch proper and only play the ending portion, finishing with a piano solo by Joel with Orfeo teases.
The second set is a ripper – with Phil’s > Visions > Kabump (with drum solo including Jake on perc) is awesome. They continue to melt faces with the new song, JaJunk > Out of Order, the Song Remains the Same (Led Zeppelin).
The Triple Wide starts a little differently with the electronic 16-notes coming in along with the kick drum riff.
A nice early version of 13 days shows they are getting used to this and other new songs, and a great version of Andy’s Last Beer finishes the second set.
Encore: Two tight versions of Uncommon, and Roulette.
