The Madison Theater Peoria IL: January 30, 2003
Notable:
Track titles are off in this archive.org recording, but as usual it’s a great recording and plays in order.
Opening the set with JaJunk, it’s a sweet version with improv jams sprinkled throughout. There’s a small Hurt Bird Bath tease at the end before they start into Anchor Drops instead, noted at All Things.
The Prowler is fast-paced, and high-energy. As is common, especially back in the early 2000s, Prowler goes right into 2nd Self without a pause.
Brendan welcomes everyone asks for a round of applause for Garage Mahal, “those guys are bad.” (In a good way.) Then he asks the crowd for a topic for this next song. “Not a song, we need a topic, we’re going to make something up. Anyone got a key?”
They play a 9-minute “Jimmy Stewart” starting with a Def Leppard Hysteria tease and other 80s teases throughout. Brendan sings a chorus of Groovin’ by the Young Rascals.
They break the jam down, improv with no rhythm for a few seconds and then go into Blue Echo. It still doesn’t have the double-time section, but they play the main riff a second time.
Blue Echo has a moment of silence and then they go into an improv jam led by Joel on synth. It’s mislabeled as a song on the track list (Prof. Wormbog), but it’s a 10-minute jam.
Good ‘Ol Boys, the Waylon Jennings tune made famous as the theme song of Dukes of Hazzard, shines with Jake’s vocals.
It’s the new tune combo to finish the set: Miss Tinkles Overture > Mulche’s Odyssey.
Set 2 starts with some very spacey electronic synth sounds. They drift seamlessly into All In Time.
It’s a nice long 18-minute AIT complete with a drums section.
Africa tease before Water. Then Jake starts off Glory, it’s at the up-tempo speed which is common these days. Garage Mahal steps in and plays with the band, and they transition into their song, Weapons of Mass Destruction.
They really go off on some improv tangents playing together as two bands on stage. It’s after 20 minutes of playing that the lyrics finally come in the Garage Mahal song.
Prowler ends the set, a quick but strong version, without the vocal Boyz2Men interlude.
Encore: Joel announces that they’re 99% sure they’ll be playing at Summer Camp in Peoria coming up in the Spring. It would be their first of more than 20 years playing the local festival.
Der Bluten Kat starts with a Metallica tease, Seek and Destroy.
